Post-doctoral Position In The Field Of Electrocaloric Ceramics For Solid State Cooling
Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST)
Are you passionate about research? So are we! Come and join us
The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.
You ‘d like to contribute as a researcher? Join our Materials Research and Technology department
Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.
The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.
How will you contribute?
The energy needed to cool down our houses and our food stands for 15 % of the overall energy spent in the world. Electrocaloric materials could be an alternative to suppress the greenhouse gases from our fridges and improve their efficiency. These materials experience large variations of temperature when a voltage is applied. LIST has recently developed an electrocaloric heat pump exhibiting a temperature variation of 13 K, the largest ever recorded (Torello et al., Science 370, 125 (2020)). This position is a continuation of this pioneering work.
The objective of this position is to make a heat pump based on electrocaloric ceramic modules and to show that this device can exhibit a temperature gradient as large as 20 K close to room temperature. More specifically, the successful candidate will characterize and assemble electrocaloric cooling modules fabricated by our partner (Murata). Thorough characterisations will be performed on the fabricated modules (IR camera, ferroelectric loops, DSC). These modules will eventually be assembled in a heat exchanger proof of concept and tested on a dedicated set-up.
