Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.
The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.
How will you contribute?
Glass has been in use for more than 5000 years and is everywhere around us. It has an amazing span of functionalities, from visual aesthetics to electronic applications. Electronic oxides, on the other hand, are one of the most fascinating classes of materials. Their integration on glass underpins touch screens, which have become ubiquitous. However, there is an important class of electronic oxides -piezoelectrics-, whose potential has not yet been fully revealed on glass. Piezoelectrics can transform electrical energy into mechanical energy and vice versa. Intense research on their integration- and especially lead zirconate titanate, the flagship piezoelectric - on silicon-based electronics resulted in widespread applications like actuators in inkjet printers and autofocus lenses in mobile phones. Two main challenges impede integration of thin-film piezoelectrics on glass: (1) Processing temperatures above 650 °C, which are beyond the usable range of commercial glasses; (2) incompatibility of standard deposition technologies such as vacuum- and spin-coating-based with large glass sheets.
In the project we will address these two challenges by growing lead zirconate titanate on glass using flash lamp annealing method, which enables heating of thin-film materials on temperature-sensitive substrates. For the deposition technique we will use inkjet printing, a digital additive manufacturing technique, which enables printing on large sheets. The project will enable growth of piezoelectric thin films below 500 °C and will fully unleash their potential in glass-based electronics.

You hold PhD degree in Materials Science or related discipline. You have solid experience with processing of electronic oxides. Knowledge on structural and electromechanical characterization of piezoelectrics is strongly desired. Background knowledge on chemistry will be required for successful execution of the project. Understanding of finite element modeling is a strong asset.
Fluency in written and spoken English is a must.
