The first edition of the nanotechnology World Association Startup Competition, organized by NWA, is the world’s first and largest initiative devoted to identifying new companies that will lead the future of nanotechnology based products.

Terms and Conditions 

  1. The “nanotechnology World Network Startup Competition (nWNSC)” is run by the nanotechnology World Network (nWN).

  2. By entering the competition, you hereby warrant that all of the information that you submit are accurate and complete in every respect.

  3. There is a fee for entering the competition. Level 1, Ideation / Concept development ($200); Level 2, Validation /  PoC ($500); Level 3, Scaling up / Growth ($1000). All details on the 3 levels are listed below. Fees are not refundable.

  4. Each team is allowed only one entry for the same project.

  5. To enter the competition, you must apply through our website You must:

    • Read the terms and conditions

    • Select the Level you're eligible for.

    • Fill out the application form.

    • Submit the application before the deadline.

  6. nWN will claim 5% of proprietary rights over the initiatives, technologies, and ideas submitted to the competition.

  7. If you are selected as a semifinalist, you will be notified of your selection via email. If you fail to respond within 48 hours of being notified, you will automatically forfeit your right to compete in the second round. If you do not provide the required information needed for the next phase of the competition within the specified deadline, you will also forfeit your right to compete in the second round.

  8. Any changes to the attending team must be communicated with our management team for approval.

  9. Semifinalist teams must attend the pre-bootcamp, the pitch competition & the final award ceremony in person. This event will be held during the ICMAT 2019, in Singapore, between June 23rd and 28th, 2019. At least one member per team must attend.

  10. Teams are expected to work on and submit specific deliverables prior to the pre-bootcamp and conference.Qualified teams are not required to pay any expense to the pre-bootcamp, however participants are expected to pay for their own flight ticket and accommodation in Singapore. The nanotechnology World Network Startup Competition (nWNSC) will be paying for the conference pass and the banquet dinner for up to two members per team. The calendar of the competition will be posted on our website, and we reserve the right to change any date at any time.

  11. Personal information collected about you is used for the purpose of the competition, and will not be distributed to third parties without your consent.



  1. The nanotechnology World Network Startup Competition (nWNSC) is divided into 3 categories:

    • (A) Ideation / Concept development (All you have is an idea with a technical description and a simplified business plan

    • (B) Validation /  PoC (You have a proof of concept and a business plan)

    • (C) Scaling up / Growth (You already have revenues, a business plan, a marketing plan and revenue projection)

  2. The startups in each category go through 2 rounds of judging:

  3. In Round One, teams must fill and submit an online application that consists of ten sections:

    • General questions

    • Title of the project

    • 200 words summary

    • Innovation

    • Technical Description

    • Financial Sustainability

    • Scalability

    • Team

    • Upload business plan

    • Upload other documents

  4. In Round One, applications are accepted in English only.

  5. In Round One, the technical aspect of each project will be validated by one expert in that field. Once the project obtain the technical validation, the application will be forwarded to another team in charge of reviewing the business plan, financial sustainability, scalability and team.

  6. In Round One: 20 teams will be selected. These teams will have scored the highest average score on their application forms. nWN reserves the right to modify the number of selected teams.

  7. To be eligible for Round Two, the semifinalist teams must submit certain deliverables that will be communicated to them in due time. The semifinalist teams must also sign the “Engagement Letter”. All persons whose names are mentioned as part of the team must sign the form.

  8. In Round Two, the selected semifinalist teams are required to attend a pre-boot camp (one day before the pitch competition), the final award ceremony and conference. The training pre-boot camp is led in English. At least one of the team members who will be attending the workshop must be fluent in English.

  9. The semifinalist teams are required to pitch in front of a Round Two jury during the 2 day final event where they will have 5 minutes to present.

  10. Following the pitch competition, the jury will spend 15 minutes with each team for a Q&A session. After the oral presentations and Q&A session of the second round, the jury will deliberate and select the 10 winners.

  11. The pitch competition will be open to the ICMAT 2019 attendees and the public will be able to vote for their favorite project through an online application.

  12. All the oral presentations should be delivered in English.

  13. Information about the Round and Final Round Judges will be available on our website as soon as the names are finalized.

  14. The 10 winning projects will be announced at the Award Ceremony that will be held during the banquet.



  1. Cash prizes will be awarded to 10 winning teams.

  2. Prize money will only be transferred to the legal entity specified in the Engagement Letter.

  3. Prize money will NOT be transferred to individuals.

  4. If the startup was not registered as a legal entity within the 3 months following the competition, The nanotechnology World Network Startup Competition (nWNSC) will no longer transfer the money prize.

  5. The nanotechnology World Network Startup Competition (nWNSC) will endeavour to send prizes within three months of the competition end date but cannot guarantee this delivery time.



  1. The nanotechnology World Network Startup Competition (nWNSC) reserves the right to disqualify any entry at any phase of the competition. The reasons for disqualification can be breach of any of the rules, breach of eligibility criteria, breach of any applicable law, bad conduct or offensive behavior, or invalid answers contained in the applications.



  1. The nanotechnology World Network Startup Competition (nWNSC) reserves the right to amend these rules at any time.

  2. In the event of any misinterpretation regarding these rules, the conduct or results of the competition, or any other matter relating to the competition, the decision of the nanotechnology World Network Startup Competition (nWNSC) shall be final and unchallenged.

  3. While every care is taken to ensure that the competition runs successfully, the nanotechnology World Network Startup Competition (nWNSC) will not be held responsible for any loss, damage, inconvenience, or disappointment of any kind suffered by any entrant resulting from the competition.

  4. The nanotechnology World Network Startup Competition (nWNSC) does not endorse any external linked sites and is not responsible for their content.


  1. All parties involved in the validation of the registrations (technical reviewers, judges, etc...) will have to sign a non-disclosure agreement
