Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) Coating Application

By Micro Surface Corporation

Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) coatings are paint like dry film lubriant coatings that contain corrosion inhibiting pigments that are used to provide a low friction surface to prevent galling, seizing, and fretting to extend the wear life of components that operate at temperatures between -320°F and 500°F under loads up to and exceeding 100,000psi. Micro Surface Corporation, located in the midwest an hour outside of Chicago, IL has been applying Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) also know as Moly Coating for more than 25 years. The MoS2 coatings offered by Micro Surface conform to numerous Military Spec and Aerospace requirements and are flat dark gray in color. Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) is excellent for lubricating components that: - Operate in corrosive environments. - May be stored for long periods of time. - Are rarely lubricated after leaving the production facility and permanent lubrication is needed. - Are in scenarios where operating pressures exceed the load bearing abilities of typical oils and greases. - Require a protective coating and sacrificial wear in lubricant is needed. - Have issues with galling or seizing. Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) Application Process: 1. Cleaning: Parts are cleaned to remove all oil, grease & other substances. Cast parts are de-gassed. 2. Pretreatment: Abrasive blast surface with 180-220 grit aluminum oxide Phosphate IAW MIL-DTL-16232, type M, class 3 or type Z, class 3 3. Material Preperation: MoS2 is rolled at 30 rpm for 30 minutes to ensure the coating has been adequately mixed. 4. Application: The coating is sprayed onto the item either manually or on one our automated production lines. 5. Cure / Bake: Depending on the coating used the part is cured in an oven at a temperature from 300°F to 400°F. 6. Inspection: Parts are inspected to ensure proper application.
