The Materials Science and Environmental Engineering unit carries out research and education in materials science, chemistry, environmental and energy engineering, and bioengineering. We employ approximately 20 professors, 20 university lecturers, and university instructors, and more than 100 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. Our employees represent 20 or so nationalities, and around 40% of our staff are non-Finnish nationals. We are one of the three units in the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS) at Tampere University. We work towards a cleaner and safer environment by undertaking a variety of experimental research activities and developing new technologies and materials. In the field of Engineering Materials Science, we study new materials, material structures, and related research methods with the aim of developing more sustainable materials. Our research in Chemistry and Advanced Materials focuses on the study of new functional materials and related technologies. Our priority areas in Bio and Circular Economy research include processes in environmental, energy and bioengineering, systems relating to a sustainable material circulation, and the production of chemicals, materials, and fuels.
