Semiconducting Nanomaterials

By Avantama AG

Avantama specialises in the development and production of semiconducting nanomaterials that can match the impressive rate of modern research and development into new printed electronics arrays. We have developed a range of inorganic semiconducting nanomaterials suitable for solution processing of OLED and OPV devices. These include tungsten, molybdenum, zinc, and aluminium-doped zinc oxides (WO x, MoO x, ZnO, and Al:ZnO).

ava pix for OLED & uLED Displays

Our high-performing perovskite quantum dots can be applied in pixelated photoluminescent form for QD-OLED or QD-uLED displays. Combining OLED and microLED displays with ava pix enables better colors, higher efficiency and lower display manufacturing costs. ava pix are deposited in pixel-form on blue OLED or microLED pixels to convert the blue into green and red sub-pixels. One of the most important requirements is that the very thin pixelated QD layers absorb all blue light to avoid blue leakage in the green and red subpixels. ava pix exhibit by far the highest blue absorbance if compared to InP or CdSe quantum dots. The main reason is that perovskite quantum dots do not have any shell, thus only exhibits full light absorbing properties. The industry leading FWHM (ca. 20nm), high quantum efficiency and the ultra-high optical density of Avantama’s ava pix enable the following benefits: - Thinner QD color conversion layers - Widest color gamut (95% Rec.2020) - Highest peak brightness / lowest power consumption - Widest viewing angle Our ava pix materials are available for ink jet printing and photolithography processes. These materials are under development with selected partners. The perovskite quantum dot inks and formulations are produced at mass production scale. Samsung has already commercialized QD-OLED displays using Indium phosphide QDs. However, as theses QDs are quite limited in brightness and optical density, such QD-OLED displays require an additional green OLED emitter stack to create sufficient green light intensity. This adds cost to the OLED backlight manufacturing costs. Compared to currently used InP QDs in Samsung QD-OLED displays, Avantama pQDs will: - Increase Rec.2020 to 95% - Decrease OLED stack costs at least 20$/m 2 by making the green OLED emitter redundant (Reference: DSCC 2023) For the manufacturing of QD color conversion pixels, Avantama offers ava pix for ink-jet printing and photolithography.

N-20X Coating Formulation

This electron transportation material comprises a mixture of aluminum-doped zinc oxide particles (Al:ZnO) of just 12 nm dimensions dispersed in a 2.5 cp viscosity propanol solvent. It is ideal for printed electronics using most established printing methodologies, providing low thermodynamic requirements to encourage electron motion irrespective of its application superstructure. This coating formulation enables the low-cost fabrication of ultra-efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs). Alternative coating formulations under the N-20X product terminology include: - N-20X-Flex; - N-20X-Slot; - N-20X-Jet; - N-20X-Screen. Each of these formulations is synthesized to distinct chemical and mechanical parameters to maximize their efficacy in their respective production environments.

Electron transport materials based on aluminum-doped ZnO nanoparticles

Avantama has developed a series of electron transport materials based on aluminum-doped ZnO nanoparticles in a 2-propanol solvent. The concentration of particles and the particle size distribution can be tailored as required, and the solution is compatible with both Perovskite absorbers and silver anodes. This ensures high device applicability regardless of the architecture or deposition method, with available processing techniques including spin coating and slot die printing.

P-10 Coating Formulation

Another hole transport material for direct application on to the active material in a thin film array, providing exceptional resistance to charge recombination and a compatibility with silver nanowires. This solution of 12 nm tungsten oxide (WO 3) nanoparticles in a propanol solvent is suitable for all major thin film applications, with established functionalities in OLED, OPV, and quantum dot LED (QLED) technologies.
