Materials science is a critically important field, underpinning nearly every aspect of modern engineering, technology, and innovation. This MSc programme provides you with a rigorous training in the study of materials, and how they can be harnessed for industrial and scientific progress. You'll work on a project with one of our internationally respected research teams, gaining practical experience to boost your chosen career trajectory. - Accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), enabling you to pursue Chartered Engineer status. - Top 10 in the UK for studying Materials Science (QS World Rankings by subject 2026). - Our materials academics are behind breakthroughs like the ‘super steel’ used in the Eurostar tunnel, clothes fabrics made from tyre waste particles and new bone graft material helping hundreds of thousands of patients globally. - Work in our state-of-the-art facilities, including structural, chemical and mechanical testing and analysis labs. This course is flexible, interdisciplinary and involves a combination of theoretical and practical approaches. You’ll explore the latest experimental techniques in engineering, examine the characteristics, structure and properties of materials in greater depth, and have the option to choose from modules covering manufacturing processes, nanotechnology and nanomedicine, nanocomposites, polymer synthesis, renewable energy and more. Alongside your taught modules, you'll work on a research project throughout the academic year, within one of our materials-based research groups. Your research project could be focused in the fields of ceramics, polymers, composites, elastomers, functional materials or manufacturing technologies. You will also gain practical experience in our world-class processing facilities, such as the NanoVision Centre for Advanced Microscopy, which contains equipment for high-resolution imaging, and structural, chemical and mechanical analysis.
