U.S. Requests $1.45 Billion for National Nanotechnology Initiative in 2026 Budget

Washington — The White House is seeking $1.45 billion for the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) in fiscal year 2026, according to the newly released NNI Supplement to the President’s Budget, released April 9, 2026.
The funding request marks continued federal commitment to nanoscale science and engineering, bringing the cumulative investment in the NNI since its launch in 2001 to nearly $47 billion.
The annual report, required under the 21st Century Nanotechnology Research and Development Act, details how 10 federal agencies will coordinate efforts in nanoscience research, infrastructure development, and responsible technology advancement. It also fulfills Department of Defense reporting requirements on nanotechnology investments.
Focus on Foundational and Applied Research
The 2026 request emphasizes both foundational research to deepen understanding of matter at the nanoscale and application-driven projects aimed at addressing national priorities, including next-generation electronics, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, energy, and environmental challenges.
“NNI investments support research to understand matter at the nanoscale and to translate this knowledge into technological breakthroughs that benefit all Americans,” the report states.
In addition to core R&D, the budget supports world-class research infrastructure, user facilities, and STEM education initiatives to build the future nanotechnology workforce.
Long-Term Momentum
The NNI, established in 2001, remains one of the largest and most enduring U.S. science and technology initiatives. The latest supplement highlights progress across Program Component Areas (PCAs), ranging from basic nanoscience discovery to the development of new devices and systems, while maintaining strong emphasis on the safe and responsible development of nanotechnology.
