PVD works by directly vaporizing atoms or molecules from a source of material in a vacuum chamber, allowing the vapor to condense on the surface to be coated. It can be thought of in analogy with heating water in a pot and having evaporated steam condense on the bottom side of the lid. The two most prevalent forms of PVD are sputtering and evaporation.
