Nel PreTech specializes in Industrial CT scanning for complex medical devices, electronics, additive manufacturing, precision plastic components, and other high-geometry parts where conventional inspection methods reach their limits. Industrial Computed Tomography (CT) scanning, just like the medical CT for human use, is the process of gathering 2D x-ray slice images and compiling them into a full internal and external 3D digital data set.The data is then used to solve problems or validate product. Just to be clear, there are perhaps upwards of 50 different X-ray techniques for various uses, most of which are not commercially deployed or available. For your purposes, we are talking about Computed Tomography scanning industrial products. This is sometimes referred to as x-ray material testing. The object is placed on a rotary stage. A cone beam, low-energy x-ray source projects a beam of x-rays onto the sample object. A flat panel X-ray detector on the opposite side of the source collects the data. The data can then be exported into specialized software developed for a multitude of analysis capabilities. Why Choose Industrial CT Scanning? Industrial CT scanning makes use of computer-processed combinations of many X-ray measurements taken from different angles to produce cross-sectional "tomographic" images (virtual slices) of specific areas of a scanned object. This allows the user to see inside the object without cutting. Since Computed Tomography scans do not rely on line-of-sight to acquire geometry data, nothing is missing from the scan as in structured light or laser scans. Customers Turn to Nel PreTech When... - Conventional inspection methods can't reach the feature they need to measure. - Internal CT equipment is fully booked. - They need independent accredited inspection. - They need engineering interpretation—not just scan data. - Product failures require root-cause analysis. - Critical components demand traceable measurements. CT Capability Explainer Yes, as always, there are limitations based on part density and path lengths. Yes, but it depends on the size of the pore, crack, or void and on the size of the sample. This affects the scanning resolution Yes, it can, as long as the part, fluid, gas mixture has a density difference of 10-15% Completing measurements on multi-material parts is possible, and actually having more of the low-density material helps in the scanning process. Yes, that is one of the greatest benefits of CT. It is almost always non-destructive. The only cases are when the area of interest requires an extremely high resolution or the object does not fit into the machine due to its height. Without a doubt. This is one of our most common analysis types, called colormaps (or heatmaps), where we can compare an object to a CAD model or to other samples. Certainly, there are limits to the amount of high-density material we can scan, but porosity and inclusion analysis on additive manufacturing is something we are quite versed in. ~30" tall x 24" wide or ~800mm by 615mm The smallest feature size range we can reliably detect between our 2 machines is 15-21µm. Which is 3x our smallest voxel size There is a small risk when scanning memory devices because CT scanners use ionizing X-ray radiation. The level of risk increases with longer scan times and higher X-ray power settings. However, studies have shown that the exposure required to cause significant, unrecoverable damage is substantially greater than the scan durations and settings typically used by NPC.
