Laser Processing for Clean Energy and Solar Manufacturing

By Accumet Engineering Corporation

Laser Processing for the Clean, Green and Lean Photovoltaic Energy Market Accumet brings technologies and processes refined for decades to clean energy and solar manufacturing. Precision Manufacturing for Clean Tech & Green Energy Innovation We have been at the forefront of the clean tech revolution. Companies and universities looking to develop efficient battery, solar cell, heat exchanger, and fuel cells have come to us for help in developing their products. We have had the pleasure of working on a number of these projects from the early conceptual stages through production. We're located just north of Boston, Massachusetts in Devens, MA, and proudly service the entire US with many laser machining and secondary processing services. All of our materials are stocked in-house for optimal convenience. What precision manufacturing processes are used in clean energy and green technology development? Clean energy applications — including solar cells, fuel cells, advanced batteries, and heat exchangers — require precision cutting, drilling, and processing of a wide range of materials, many of which are thin, fragile, or chemically sensitive. Laser cutting is used for patterning electrodes, cutting thin foils, and processing substrates in photovoltaic and fuel cell manufacturing. Laser drilling produces the micro-holes and vias needed in fuel cell membranes and heat exchanger components. Precision lapping and polishing are used where tight surface finish and flatness tolerances affect device efficiency or bonding quality. What clean energy and green technology projects has Accumet supported? Accumet has worked with companies and universities developing efficient batteries, solar cells, heat exchangers, and fuel cells — supporting projects from early conceptual stages through production. Accumet brings laser machining and precision substrate processing capabilities refined over decades to clean energy applications, providing a materials processing partner with experience across the full range of processes these applications require. All materials are stocked in-house at Accumet's Devens, MA facility. Laser cutting vs. mechanical cutting for thin electrode and foil materials in battery and fuel cell manufacturing? Mechanical cutting methods such as die cutting and slitting apply direct force to electrode and foil materials, which can introduce burrs, edge deformation, and particulate contamination — all problematic in electrochemical cells where particle contamination can cause internal shorts. Laser cutting is a non-contact process that produces clean, burr-free edges with no tooling wear and no mechanical stress on the material. For precision electrode patterning, separator cutting, and thin current collector processing in batteries and fuel cells, laser cutting reduces contamination risk and supports tighter dimensional tolerances than mechanical methods.
