Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)

By Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC-CSIC)

It analyzes the difference in heat flow between a sample and a reference while they are subjected to a temperature program. Applications: The technique is widely used in a variety of applications, both for quality control and as a research tool. DSC is commonly used in the pharmaceutical, polymer, cosmetic, textile, and food industries. This technique can be employed for the following determinations: - Phase transitions: determination of melting and crystallization points - Polymorphism and pseudopolymorphism studies - Determination of glass transition temperatures (Tg) - Cp determinations - Purity determination - Determination of thermal/oxidation stability - Kinetic studies - Polymers: curing studies, determination of glass transition, melting point, and degree of crystallinity. - Compatibility studies (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient/excipients) - Proteins: denaturation and aggregate formation - Melting and gelation processes - Phase transitions: liquid crystals, lipids - Thermoporometry determinations EQUIPMENT: DSC (821e, Mettler Toledo) Temperature range: -150 -500 ⁰C Gases: nitrogen and oxygen DSC (823e, Mettler Toledo) Temperature range: 30 -500 ⁰C Gases: nitrogen and oxygen microDSC III (Setaram) Temperature range: 0-120 ⁰C (Suitable for low energy events. Solid samples and dilute solutions)
