Focus Probing

By Bruker Alicona

Focus Probing is a measurement technology for capturing accurate 3D points and 3D contours without vertical scanning. Focus Probing extracts metrically correct 3D information directly from sensor data acquired at a single position. This significantly reduces measurement time while maintaining high accuracy. Why is Focus Probing faster than conventional 3D measurement methods? Focus Probing eliminates the need for vertical scanning. Traditional technologies such as Advanced Focus-Variation or Vertical Focus Probing create area-based 3D datasets by scanning along the Z-axis. This increases measurement and processing times. Focus Probing captures relevant contour information directly, making measurements significantly faster. The measurement principle of Focus Probing is very similar to the Vertical Focus Probing. The difference is, that no vertical scanning is involved – but that 3D information is obtained from the sensor data at a single position. As with Vertical Focus Probing, Focus Probing also allows the measurement of contours at vertical walls, with the extension, that also multiple 3D contours can be measured within one field of view at once. The result: Faster measurements, shorter cycle times, and greater productivity — all while delivering the precise contour data required for demanding manufacturing applications. Application Example: Hole Distance Measurement - The contours of two laser-drilled holes are captured automatically and aligned within a 3D coordinate system. The software then calculates the exact center-to-center distance. The result is a fast, accurate, and repeatable measurement process. The advantage of Focus Probing is the fast processing time. With Focus Probing it is possible to gather high accurate 2D contours in a 3D coordinate system. Due to the efficient way of data capturing measurement time and processing times decrease heavily. This leads to faster measurements of contour based applications.
