Compatibility of Materials Guidance

By APIEZON

When selecting the right grease for your requirements you first need to consider Vacuum Level and the Working Temperature. Exploring the vapour pressure and temperature ranges should narrow down your grease search to a few likely candidates. The next step is to consider the compatibility of the materials. If the materials are not compatible, for example an incompatible o-ring material and grease, then leaks can be caused as the o-ring can swell. The o-ring may also degrade to the point of contaminating the system if the issue is not identified. Here at Apiezon HQ most of our Compatibility of Materials enquiries are related to o-rings. There are a wide variety of o-ring materials available, so we include a handy list of compatible materials on our Apiezon datasheets. Our hydrocarbon range of greases are all compatible with a wide range of o-ring materials including:- - Viton - Silicone - Nitrile (>30% nitrile content) - Nylon - Polyurethane - Polyethylene - Polypropylene Our PFPE 501 is chemically inert, and so is compatible with all common o-ring materials.
