Malta, NY, 16 October 2026. The Department of Commerce's CHIPS Program Office has agreed with GlobalFoundries of Malta, NY to amend its existing award and reallocate up to $955m in incentives under the US CHIPS and Science Act.
The amendment will increase the portion of an existing CHIPS Program award allocated to GlobalFoundries' modernization and expansion of its semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Malta, NY and Burlington, VT. As part of the amendment, GlobalFoundries has agreed to expand its capital investment in these facilities to $5bn. The total amount of the existing CHIPS Program award will not be increased.
The investment will expand domestic manufacturing capacity for technologies increasingly critical to communications infrastructure and data centers, including silicon photonics, silicon-germanium and the first US-based source of silicon interposers supporting advanced packaging technologies.
"GlobalFoundries is expanding its investment to develop and manufacture critical semiconductor technologies enabling data-center and high-performance compute infrastructure," says Bill Frauenhofer, executive director for Semiconductor Innovation and Investment at the Department of Commerce. "The CHIPS Program award supports GlobalFoundries efforts to onshore and accelerate the development of these important semiconductor components."
