Brand: JEOL Model: JEM 2011 Description: The high resolution (HR) Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) was donated by INTEL Costa Rica and installed at Lanotec in 2015. It is a microscope that uses an electron beam, which has a shorter wavelength than that of visible light and therefore allows structures with dimensions within the nanometric range to be observed. The electron beam is directed towards the sample to be analyzed. Some electrons bounce or are absorbed by it and others pass through it forming an enlarged image. This microscope can magnify an object up to 1,500,000 times with a resolution of 0.19 angstroms in ultrathin sections of the sample, in the range of 10- 60 nanometers thick. It is a tool that can be used in the structural characterization of nanostructured materials as well as for the study at the cellular and subcellular levels of biological samples, animal and plant tissues, cell cultures, bacteria, viruses, and macromolecules.
