XRD identifies crystalline phases, estimates how much of each is present, and compares phase makeup between samples. Typical questions - Which crystalline phases are present? - How much of each phase is there? - Is this batch phase-pure, or are there secondary phases? - Do two batches have the same phase makeup? Good to know - Phase fractions are estimated in weight percent from reference intensity ratios. Ask if you need full Rietveld refinement. - Amorphous material shows as a broad background, not as identifiable phases. - Very minor phases can fall below the detection limit.
