Particle Size Analysis

By Louisiana State University

Particle size is an important parameter in many aspects of chemical processes (synthesis, catalysis), biological, pharmaceutical and materials science applications, and engineering. Sample types of interest can include liposomes, exosomes, (metallic) nano particles, sand, cement, and even saw dust. Depending on the material, particle diameter and research aim, the analysis can be run either with the sample dispersed in a solvent or in dry state. LSU AMAC is hosting two different Anton Paar instruments for this purpose, the Litesizer 500 (dynamic light scattering) and the PSA 1090 L/D (laser diffraction). Besides of particle size distributions, the Litesizer 500 can be used for electrophoretic light scattering, and for the measurement of transmittance and refractive index of liquids i.e. dispersions.
