Contrast agent for perfusion MRI

By Nanoxort LLC

Dynamic susceptibility contrast MRI (DSC-MRI) uses high temporal resolution T2*-weighted sequences to generate perfusion maps and localize hypo and hyper-perfused areas. However, to minimize long term toxicity and expedite clearance, gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) are designed as small molecules, which results in rapid GBCA extravasation following injection. However, in areas with disrupted blood brain barrier (e.g. high-grade gliomas, stroke), GBCA leakage into the extravascular space results in erroneous estimation of cerebral perfusion parameters, and reduces the reliability of DSC MRI. Nanoxort is in the early stages of developing an iron-based contrast agent for optimal DSC-MRI. This technology will provide neuroradiologists with higher-resolution perfusion images for more accurate diagnosis and assessment of neurological diseases requiring DSC-MRI, and allows vascular neurologists to optimize treatment strategies.
