Extending the Kibble-Zurek Mechanism

Jun 20, 2024

A theory first applied to phase transitions in the early Universe and then to defects in superfluid helium can now account for a wider variety of systems.

A New Way to Transport Spin Currents

Jun 20, 2024

Spin currents carried by magnetic waves called magnons can be sent across a device without using insulating magnets—a result that could lead to spintronic devices compatible with silicon electronics.

Fast and faithful quantum measurements of electron spin qubits

Jun 20, 2024

A method for rapidly and precisely measuring the quantum state of electrons in a silicon device could help scale up quantum computers

Researchers Create New Class of Materials Called ‘Glassy Gels’

Jun 20, 2024

Researchers have created a new class of materials called “glassy gels” that are very hard and difficult to break despite containing more than 50% liquid. Coupled with the fact that glassy gels are simple to produce, the material holds promise for a variety of applications.

A vivid rainbow of data from liquid crystals in silico

Jun 20, 2024

PME researchers developed a new software package that lets researchers see new — more colorful — details of the microscopic internal structure of microscopic liquid crystals, like those used in LCD screens.

Molecular Sponge For The Electronics Of The Future

Jun 18, 2024

An international research team led by Dr Florian Auras from Dresden University of Technology (TUD) has succeeded in developing a new type of material in the rather young research field of covalent organic frameworks. The new two-dimensional polymer is characterised by the fact that its properties can be controlled in a targeted and reversible manner. This has brought the researchers a step closer to the goal of realising switchable quantum states. These results were recently published in the renowned journal 'Nature Chemistry'.
